We are unveiling this new addition under the Forged by Fire umbrella. Crosses for Benny is a way for us to offer individual crosses to those who receive our meals while we are out serving.
The background for this project stretches back many years. Kathy Capace started assembling necklace style crosses to hand out to people she and her husband visited. While serving as their pastor, she gave me one of these crosses to wear. If you know me, I am not a jewelry person, but I loved the little cross around my neck.
While on a visit to a dear friend in the hospital I felt the desire to place my cross around his neck. From that moment on, Benny cherished that cross. After his passing his family shared the importance of that gesture and how much the cross meant to him.
Upon hearing that story, I thought that handing a cross out at our meal services might be an incredible addition to the spiritual care side of our work. In addition to our meals, and prayers, bibles and devotionals, we pray these crosses will help bring hope and strength to those we encounter. It is just another reminder of how much those we serve are loved by their Savior Jesus.
